How hard can it be to paint your home’s exterior, right? This may seem like a simple question, but the reality is, exterior painting can be tricky and pose a whole new set of challenges than just painting an interior room. Your home’s exterior is exposed to the elements around the clock and you want to be sure that it is the best shape to be painted without causing damage. Not to mention, your home’s exterior is the first thing you see, so you’ll want to be extra careful not to create an eyesore. Here are the top DIY hacks for painting your home’s exterior.
Reaching High Places
There’s only so much real estate you can cover on the ground with a roller. To reach higher on your house, without using a ladder, grab a push broom. Screw or twist off the brush broom portion and then screw on your roller to make an instant extension pole you can use on your home’s exterior.

Keep Brushes Moist
Before you embark on a DIY exterior painting journey, you’ll want to plan out when you start painting. Since you will be outdoors, you want to select a day where it is not humid or windy. Ideally, you want to start and finish the painting job the same day, but you will want to add in breaks throughout. When you take a break, put your wet brushes inside of latex gloves. This keeps the bristles moist and pliable so you don’t have to worry about dried out brushes when you come back from your break.
Get Rid of Mildew
To make sure your exterior paint job looks the best, you will want to carefully inspect all outside surfaces before you paint them. Removing any rotted wood is important as well as cleaning mildew off of shutters and any other surfaces you want to paint is key. The fastest way to remove mildew (and keep it away for longer) is to spray hydrogen peroxide directly on the surface, wait 10 minutes and then either power wash the surface, or scrub it lightly with a microfiber cloth.
These are just a few DIY exterior paint hacks. But, if you are considering painting your home yourself, make sure you properly plan ahead of time so you can be prepared with the proper tools and paint to get the job done!
